The federal government has introduced the ‘Apna Meter, Apni Reading’ system by launching the Power Smart App.

The initiative aims to empower electricity consumers by making them an active part of the billing process.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially inaugurated the app, which allows users to upload a photo of their electricity meter on a specific date each month. The monthly bill will be generated based on this consumer-submitted reading.

According to the Power Division, the system is designed to significantly reduce issues like overbilling, reading errors, unnecessary interventions, and customer complaints. The initiative is being hailed as a solid governance reform that truly empowers consumers.

If a consumer submits the meter reading on the assigned date, the later reading taken by a meter reader will not be prioritized. Only the consumer’s submitted reading will be recorded for billing purposes.

The system is particularly beneficial for those eligible for government electricity subsidies. For example, consumers using up to 200 units typically receive a bill of around Rs. 2,330, but even a single additional unit can lead to the loss of the subsidy, increasing the bill to approximately Rs. 8,104.

The Power Smart App enables deserving consumers to timely submit their readings and continue availing their subsidies without disruption.
