At least seven dead, multiple injured as monsoon rains pound Punjab

PDMA predicts current monsoon system is likely to continue till July 1

A fresh spell of monsoon rains has led to tragic incidents across multiple cities in Punjab, resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals and injuries to several others.

Most casualties were caused by roof collapses, lightning strikes, and flash flooding in low-lying areas. No fatalities were reported in Lahore, where the rains were intense but largely non-fatal.

In Bada Gawah area of Jhelum, a rainwater drain overflowed during the downpour. A loader vehicle lost control and overturned after being struck by floodwaters. Two people riding in a rickshaw were swept away and drowned. Rescue teams managed to save six others from the incident.

Chunian

In the Talwandi area of Chunian, the roof of a house collapsed due to continuous rain. Two young girls were buried under the rubble and died on the spot. Rescue personnel recovered their bodies and shifted them to the local hospital.

Bahawalnagar

In Bahawalnagar, the roof of a mud house caved in due to the rain, resulting in the death of a 4-year-old child. The incident occurred in a rural locality, and rescue teams responded promptly.

Okara

In Okara’s Bangla Gogira area, the roof of a mud house collapsed on a group of girls studying in a room. One girl died while two others were injured. In a separate incident, a man suffered 18% burns after being struck by lightning during the storm.

Mian Channu

In Barkat Chowk Bagh, Mian Channu, a young man died and another was injured after lightning struck the area during rain. The injured victim is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

Chiniot

Near Jhang Road in Chiniot, the roof of a verandah collapsed during the rain. Four people were injured and shifted to the hospital for medical treatment. Rescue officials said the structure was weakened due to prolonged exposure to moisture.

PDMA officials stated that this monsoon system is likely to continue till July 1, urging preparedness across vulnerable districts.
