Rawalpindi is ready to launch its inaugural underground cabling pedestrian street on Bank Road within the Saddar commercial district. The inauguration is set for February 26, with Punjab prime Minister Maryam Nawaz anticipated to serve as the prime guest.
The project, finalized at an expenditure of Rs1.2 billion, encompasses a one-kilometer segment from Murree Road to Police Station Road, a vibrant locale with various premier brand establishments.
During the initial phase, all overhead utilities, such as electricity and telephone lines, were transferred underground. The development includes a new sewage system, expansive footpaths, contemporary lighting, resting benches, and food kiosks providing great refreshments.
Executive washrooms have been established for guests and families. The street comprises four pedestrian-only blocks, each featuring substantial gates at the entrances and exits, whereas neighboring thoroughfares such as Canning Road and Kashmir Road remain accessible to automobile traffic.
Furthermore, electric vehicles offer a complimentary shuttle service throughout all four blocks.
Rashid Saqib, Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson for the Cantonment Board Rawalpindi, indicated that analogous underground cabling initiatives are under progress on Haider Road, Kashmir Road, Adamji Road, and Mall Road.
Initiatives are underway to render Five Star Hotel Chowk, TM Chowk, and Mall Plaza Chowk on Mall Road signal-free, alongside the construction of an underground pedestrian thoroughfare connecting Medical Stores Plaza and the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology.
The Punjab government has designated Rs4.38 billion for these efforts, with the objective of completion within six months to improve traffic flow and pedestrian accessibility in the region.
