Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the construction of a new sewage and drainage system for big Punjab cities in a major step towards bettering the infrastructure of the province.
This choice fits into a larger project aiming at addressing long-standing issues with urban water management and sanitation. Long suffering from poor sewage systems, major cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan will gain from this much-needed make-over.
Particularly during the monsoon season, the new sewage and drainage system is meant to solve the recurrent water logging and flooding problems. Years of underdevelopment of the current systems have greatly inconvenienced the people, resulting in a surge in waterborne infections and a general decrease in public health.
Ensuring effective garbage disposal and improved water drainage—two of the main objectives of this new infrastructure plan—will help to greatly lower the health hazards connected with stationary water.
The new system will manage more garbage and save the streets from flooding following heavy rain, a frequent problem in many urban centers by improving and enlarging the current networks.
The Punjab government also sees this initiative as part of a bigger scheme to improve the urban scene of the province thereby increasing its livability and sustainability. The project shows an increasing awareness of the need of effective and clean infrastructure in supporting improved urban surroundings. Maryam Nawaz Sharif is acting pro-actively with this endeavor to ensure Punjabi people live in a sustainable and healthy future.
