Pakistan to launch First Ever freight train to Russia,

On 15 March 2025, trial operations are anticipated to begin for Pakistan’s first international freight train service to Russia. An important step in improving regional trade connectivity with nations like Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan is this project.
Key Details
Background of the launch follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Pakistan and Russia in June 2024 during St. Petersburg International Economic Forum aimed at establishing a cost effective rail trade link between South Asia and Central Asia.
Operational Framework: The Pakistan Railway Freight Transportation Company PRFTC will manage the service which will operate from the Qasim International Container Terminal and Pakistan International Container Terminal. Service will offer container options of 22-tonne T.E.U and 44-tonne (F.E.U) capacities
Logistics: Taftan station in Pakistan will serve as the primary entry point for goods along this new trade corridor. Key logistical and customs issues largely resolved facilitating smoother operations.
