Sean Baker marks major milestone with ‘Anora’

Sean Baker, the writer and director of Anora, achieved a major victory at the Writers Guild of America Awards.

Winning the award for Best Original Screenplay, the film follows a Brooklyn-born s** worker who marries the son of an oligarch, only for her marriage to be threatened when news reaches Russia and her in-laws intervene.

Anora has also earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Original Screenplay.

Meanwhile, the award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to Nickel Boys, while in television, Shogun and Hacks emerged as winners in their respective categories.

The 77th Writers Guild of America Awards took place across multiple ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles. Hosted by stand-up comedian, writer, and actor Joel Kim Booster at the Beverly Hilton in LA, the event also featured Roy Wood Jr. leading the NYC ceremony. Wood humorously informed the audience that the screenplay awards were being presented first, as nominees needed to catch flights to London for the BAFTAs the following day—despite forecasts of snowstorms.
